The Exploration of Self Amidst Natural Space
My series brings attention to Virginia's landscapes by photographing abstract perspectives often left unnoticed. Zooming into the natural world and removing key focal points evokes curiosity in the viewer and a desire to explore the unseen beyond what the lens has captured. My portfolio consists of two parts - an arrangement of triptychs and a sub-series of singular prints forming a visual showcase of natural form, texture, and contrast taken with a digital camera. The triptychs are made up of four color images highlighting my personal interaction with the vast variety of landscapes in Virginia, from fields of wheat to running rivers. Adjacent to each color image are black and white flanking landscapes, encouraging the eye to move from the center outwards, first observing the abnormal before transitioning to the normal. The black and white sub-series is an abstraction of naturally colorful forms, drawing focus to the details rather than the big picture. Each image explores not what is but what could be. My aim is to encourage the viewer to go out and explore nature. There is a great big world out there!
